11th Grade College Bound Students

September

  • Begin to think about your reasons for going to college. What are your goals?
  • Check your transcript and know what is means.
  • Set a plan for the next 2 years of high school.
  • Understand where you are on your educational journey and where you are headed.

October

  • Take the PSAT test.
  • Attend a college night at the community college.
  • If you are interested in military academy, get info now.
  • Register for Early Start (concurrent enrollment) at the Community Colleges.  Classes will begin in January.  See Mrs. Smith for an application and visit the community college websites for more information.

November

  • Pay close attention to your studies, the junior year is closely looked at by colleges.
  • Continue to add materials to your “college case”.
  •  Start familiarizing yourself with DCHS college resources.

December

  • Continue to think about the best college environment and major for you.
  • Plan holiday visits to colleges.  Don’t forget to write it all down!
  • Talk to your EC or Mrs. Smith about signing up for any SAT II Tests.
  • Continue career and college exploration by talking with EC’s, parents/guardian or family members.
  • Be organized.
  • Update resume.
  • Signup for College Bound for next semester.

January

  • Receive your PSAT results and study the materials that you need more work on. 
  • Decide if you will need test prep for SAT/ACT and SAT II and schedule your test prep.
  • Start attending your college classes, if applicable.

February

  • Actively begin your college search. Identify the important factors in choosing a college for you. Two year or four year? Location? Public or private? Cost? Scholarship opportunities?
  • Register for the April SAT I or register for the April ACT.

March

  • Register for the April SAT or ACT if you haven’t already.
  • Meet with Mrs. Smith to begin developing a list of colleges you are exploring.
  • Visit any colleges that you can talk your parents into visiting.

April

  • Attend college info nights
  • Continue to work hard on your classes.
  • Start looking into some meaningful summer activities.

May

  • Take the SAT or ACT.
  • Narrow your college list if possible and/or add new ideas.
  • Decide which colleges to visit in the summer.
  • Identify 2-3 teachers who know you and can provide letters of recommendations.
  • Put together a calendar for September to December of important deadlines.

 Summer

  • READ – you are often asked what you are reading in a college interview.
  • Work on rough drafts of college essays and resume.
  • Do something that none of your friends are doing, something that makes you stand out in a crowd.
  • Find out your SAT or ACT test scores and determine if you need to take a test prep class.
  • Have fun and visit colleges with you friends.
