Our Vision DCHS desires to present an integrated curriculum of quality academics with clear applications to the real world that will equip students with technology-rich skills and knowledge and a solid foundation for work and/or college/university enrollment. DCHS has adopted a new-paradigm approach to educating the region’s youth. Viewing the community as a classroom, learning will take place in 8 general venues:
Via Internet (NovaNET program, currently used by over 1,000 U.S. public high schools) for the majority of students’ core courses and for certain New Horizons Computer Learning Center (NHCLC) courses. At San Joaquin Delta College (SJDC) (Stockton), Modesto Junior College (MJC) (Modesto), and Los Positas Junior College (LPJC) (Livermore) for dual-enrollment courses. At job sites as part of the student’s internship training. At businesses and agencies for specialized workshops (i.e., safety in the workplace). At various sites in the surrounding community(ies) for community service projects. While large chunks of the curriculum will be delivered electronically, all students need and will receive direct and frequent contact with adults and other students. Each DCHS teacher will take direct responsibility for approximately 25 students that reside in a particular radius. This group will meet on a regular basis in a social/intellectual format. Common problems and issues will be discussed. Other times will be set aside strictly for social purposes (i.e., a particular event will be planned by and for the group under the sponsorship of the teacher and/or some of the parents). Such events will include visitations to colleges and universities or even time spent at various work sites. Other times will see all groups together for trips of special interest. Parents will be invited to attend these gatherings as warranted. Many events will also be planned by and for all groups’ participation. |
Our Program
Benefits of enrolling in Delta Charter High School:
One-on-one Learning Environment One-on-one Learning Environment Studies show that optimal learning takes place in a one-on-one learning environment. Students are able to quickly move ahead if they are doing well, or they are able to concentrate longer on challenging areas in order to master concepts.
Broad Range of Course Work Reading and writing, science, mathematics, social studies, foreign languages, visual and performing arts, and physical education are all courses planned and monitored by teachers in conjunction with the parent or legal guardian and student.
Parent Choice The parent or legal guardian assists the teacher in establishing a personalized study plan unique to each student's learning style, needs, and preferences. This allows flexibility in pace, assignments and evaluation methods and instructional materials.
Credentialed Teachers Delta Charter High School hires local directors and teachers to provide the support and instruction students need. These teachers work with the parent or legal guardian and the student in a variety of settings to insure that the individual student needs are met. Teachers are required to have a valid California State teaching credential.
Accountability At our charter school students meet regularly with credentialed teachers to maintain the same standards, ethics, and quality control as other schools in the traditional setting. Teachers, parents, and students meet every four weeks or less, as agreed upon at enrollment, to review and evalute student work and to assign student work for the next assignment period. Our charter school meets District and state standards for the operation of an independent study school model.
How students, parents, and teacher's team for student success:
At the time of enrollment, a credentialed teacher works with the family to define Personalized Study requirements and the student's educational goals. Curriculum options are discussed, including computer-based or more traditional methods. Graduation requirements are reviewed. A plan is then established that integrates California State Content Standards with the desired methods and approaches to learning.
Following enrollment, the teacher will meet regularly to assign and evaluate student work, monitor attendance, and document student progress toward course completion. Samples of student work are submitted to the charter school each assignment period.
Student work samples might include written, video taped performances, or photo journals. Outcomes are also measured by the adminstration of state assessment tests, currently the STAR test. This test is administered in the spring at the school site.
